PTO

Tonight we had our third PTO meeting of the school year. We had a great showing from the teachers, and a not so great showing from the parents. In recent months I have played with the times and tried to recruit parents through various modes. Now I am adding my blogspot to the list. I am pleading for parental support. The PTO needs parental support to make the organization flow. The work that needs to be done is minimal and the meetings rarely last more than a half hour. If anyone has suggestions on how I can get more parental support I am all ears.

I am looking for a few good parents that are willing to work with me and the outstanding teachers of CES to make this place a great envrionment for our kids. Please contact me if you would like to be a part of this important group.

Do you have any special projects that would be of special interest to the parents? For example, are you trying to buy new books or add some playground equipment? It's so much easier to get people involved when they or their kids can directly benefit from their involvement.

Maybe organize a pto fundraiser to bring in money for something for the kids.

Thank you for the response. We actually do a fundraiser each year and we use the money to supplement teacher supplies, etc... We also use the money to fund small initiatives for the students. The members that have been doing this are ready to pass the baton on to others. We just can't get parents to show up.

Principal Wilkins, your post popped up on my Google News Alert. It is great to see a Principal communicating their desire for parents to be involved in the education process.

The family is a critical component to any child’s life. When it comes to education, no greater statistic stands truer today than the achievement gap between students whose parents are involved in their education process and those who do not have that support. Personal responsibility, safety and education are key elements to bringing up the next generation.

After 10 years of experience leading a volunteer program in my children’s elementary and middle schools, Schools And Families Engaged (the S.A.F.E. TEAM on Campus) was launched in 2008 to meet the needs of schools and families. Many of the school's families do not know where to begin in school. Many parents today never had an example of their parents supporting the school let alone they may not have enjoyed their personal schooling experience. Why would they have a desire to serve? You only know what you have experienced.

Make time to check out our site www.thesafeteam.com . On the About SAFE page, click on the 40 Developmental Assets link. This will tie in all the benefits of families and communities supporting their students both in school and out of school.
